How to handle a business lunch appointment?

As you by now know, connects business professionals through face-to-face, one-on-one lunch appointments with people they have never met. You can join open lunches or only connect with people based on parameters you set, i.e. profession, time in profession, gender.

Next week many of you will be going to your first “GoGrabLunch” appointment. Here are a few guidelines to help each participant get the most out of the time together:

1) Business relationships are all about trust and that is not something that is built over one lunch appointment. Keep in mind that your first appointment together is merely about learning more about one another and whether or not there is the potential for a deeper business connection.

2) Come prepared with some good conversation starters in mind. While discussing the weather or the local sports team is nice it might be better to have some quality questions in mind prior to sitting down. Often I use a series that goes something like this – Tell me about your background? How did you get into something like that? What do you like the most? What don’t you like? People love to talk about themselves so an easy way to keep the conversation going is to let them do just that.

3) Be on time, need I say more.

4) Have no hidden agenda. The truth is that we all are making connections to increase our profit. Yes I said it – it is all about the money! A mentor of mine taught me to stop looking at people as prospects and think of them as referral sources. His point is that if you sell to everyone you meet you will run out of candidates quickly. However, each “prospect” you meet knows at least 100-200 other people. And chances are if they like you and like your product or service they will tell others. If you can teach them about what type of customer you are looking for then your reach grows exponentially.

Keep these principles in mind and you are bound to make more mutually beneficial connections. By the way, don’t forget to leave us feedback about your connection and the place you choose to eat at. Not only does it raise your NetQuotient and therefore your chances to be matched for more appointments but it’s a nice way to show your thanks to us.

Get out there and “gograblunch”!
