It’s called netWORKing

A few months ago I was meeting a new contact in a popular local coffee shop. She was new to town and her father had suggested she reach out to me for some advice on where to network. During our conversation we got interrupted by at least seven people that I knew who were stopping by our table to say hello. After the last person dropped by my contact commented “aren’t you just the poster boy for networking!” Sure I knew each person we spoke to, but did I know them well.

You see it is easy to meet lots of people. The question is how well do you really know them?

Business relationships are no different than personal relationships. They take work to develop and even more to maintain. As the saying goes – it’s called netWORKing for a reason. Many contacts I make through networking seem to have the concept all wrong. They appear to believe that you meet someone, exchange business cards, and start sending sales one anothers way. Sorry folks, but it just does not work that way.

Mutually beneficial relationships are formed in person and over time. Before any real business can commence you have to develop a high level of trust with your contacts. And that is not done over the internet or in groups.

So why not GoGrabLunch with someone?
