Semi-solitary confinement

One of the worst types of punishments a criminal or even torture victim can experience is solitary confinement. Deprived of the basics of sound, sight, hearing, and human contact people often “break down”.

So why is that we are becoming a society that elects solitude? I know that is a bit extreme. Certainly, people have all these elements in the form of social media. But I wonder to what extent.

A report done in 1977 by the Council of Europefound that prolonged close-confinement of long-term prisoners led to what was termed “separation syndrome”.

When I Googled “limited social interaction” I was able to find hits on social anxiety disorder high on the first page. Interestingly enough, the symptoms of the latter were oddly similar to the former.
