I have often heard it said that a benefit to working for yourself is that you get to pick the people you work with. Business networking is no different.
Building a large number of business contacts is really, if done correctly, like building your own sales force. Because if they like you, and trust you, they should be looking for ways to refer you. And that is the beauty of getting to decide who you build relationships with through your business networking activities. You get to decide who joins your “team”.
Does that mean that you have to “like” everyone you come in contact with in order to help each other’s business? Most certainly not. But think how much more fun any type of activity is when you do it with a group of people that you enjoy being around.
In a book by Jane Applegate called “201 Great Ideas For Your Small Business” there is a small section called Great Idea 136 “Work with People You Like”. In this portion John Chuang founder of Acquent talks about how working with your friends and allows you to work around their strengths and weaknesses. John goes on to say that “you know who to trust”.
Think of how much faster your business can grow when you combine fun (working with people you like) and the speed of trust.
